Almost every website on the web we visited today, the user is prompted with a GDPR notification or a cookie pop-up, which purpose is to make the web more transparent for the user about their data being stored, but does it, really?

What is the GDPR anyway?

The GDPR stands for the General Data Protection Regulation, and is decided by the European Union as its data privacy, and security law.

The regulation was put into effect on May 25, 2018.

As a company, the fines for violating the GDPR are very high. There are two tiers of penalties, which max out at €20 million or 4% of global revenue (whichever is higher), plus data subjects have the right to seek compensation for damages.

The GDPR and cookie pop-up

Before GDPR a cookie pop-up, or cookie notice was already a thing, but in a much more subtle way.

Most website only had a small cookie notice at the bottom or top of the website stating the use of cookies on the site. It could in most cases easily be ignored, and you could continue using the site.

It has now been changed by law from the EU that now the active consent of the website user must be given that these Cookies may be used, if the cookies you want to use pull / use personal sensitive data.

As an example, most websites have Google Analytics to collect statistics from the website, but without consent it is now FORBIDDEN.

Complex laws = Complex cookie pop-ups

The laws insists that YOU as a user take an active choice each time you visits a new website, and that you know all there is to know about which type of data is stored by using the site... But do you feel more enlightened? Do you even care?

As the law matured, the requirements got more complex, and likewise did the amount of data and choices presented in these consent popups.

I my opinion. These laws hasen't done ANYTHING good for the user, but instead made web a little bit more ugly.
